Karwar, June 16: Officials of the Women and Child Development Department, with the help of social activists, stopped a child marriage in Alvewada in Karwar on Thursday. The marriage was to be held on Friday.
On receiving information about the marriage, social activists Madhav Nayak and Anu Kalas with the officials of the Women and Child Development Department and the police visited the house of the girl on Thursday night. According to Mr. Nayak, when they visited the house a mehendi function was held.
The bride, Pooja (15), was sitting with mehendi on her hands. Pooja was a school dropout and had been working in a hotel.
Mr. Nayak said that her mother Shobha had no knowledge of child marriage.
According to Pooja's mother, the marriage was fixed with Manjunath. Shobha said that her husband died a few years ago. Pooja fell in love with Manjunath and hence the marriage was decided. Initially, Shobha refused to cancel the marriage saying that Pooja was above 18.
However, she was warned of legal action. Pooja was shifted to the reception centre run by the Women and Child Development Department. Though the officials tried to trace Manjunath, he had escaped.
