Bangalore, June 17: Speakers at a meeting organised to pay tributes to the departed freedom fighter and Communist Party of India leader B V Kakkilaya, here, on Saturday, expressed concern over the recent adverse social and political developments in Karnataka.

Former minister B A Mohideen lamented that the new generation of the political and social leaders have failed to adopt the values of broad-minded leaders like Kakkilaya.

He said that coastal district of Dakshina Kannada, which once had leaders like Kakkilaya and was the cradle of land reforms, has now turned into the hotbed of communal politics.

G N Nagaraj of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) said that the stage was set for “strangling” the progressive provisions of the legislation in the next session of the Legislative Assembly by making it easy for people who are not farmers to buy agricultural land and increasing the land ceiling. The amendment, he added, would sound the death knell of small and marginal farmers and make way for companies to grab land.

He said that the role of decades-long struggle of Communists in giving a progressive edge to the Land Reforms Act in Karnataka was not given its due while chronicling the history of reforms in the State. Mr. Kakkilaya was the “spirit” of that struggle led by the undivided Communist party, he added.

Writer and editor of the magazine Hosatu, G. Ramakrishna, said that people like Kakkilaya could work overlooking factional differences, which was something that political activists today have to draw lessons from.

National Secretary of the Communist Party of India S. Sudhakar Reddy also spoke.

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday alleged that BJP was raking up the "Waqf issue" with an eye on the upcoming assembly by-polls in the state and elections in neighboring Maharashtra.

Following allegations by a section of farmers in certain parts of the state that their lands were marked as Waqf properties, he reiterated that none of them will be evicted, and notices issued to them will be withdrawn.

"BJP is doing politics. Notices were issued during their (BJP) tenure too, what do they have to say about it? During BJP's tenure over 200 notices were given. One should not practice such dual politics," Siddaramaiah said.

Speaking to reporters here, the CM said, "I have already said that the notices will be withdrawn, where is the issue? In case the notices are issued they will be withdrawn and no one will be evicted, where is the issue?" "Whichever district it is...They (BJP) had also given notices in several districts. Why did they give? Why are they doing such politics? In case notices were served by our government, they will be withdrawn and no farmers will not be evicted....the protest they have planned on November 4 is for politics keeping in mind by-polls in three segments and Maharashtra elections," he added.

A section of farmers from Vijayapura district have alleged that their lands were marked as Waqf properties, and similar allegations have surfaced from a few other places.

The BJP is planning a statewide agitation on November 4, demanding the resignation of Minority Welfare and Waqf Minister B Z Zameer Ahamed Khan, and against the Congress government over the issue.

Accusing the BJP of only doing politics and and not speaking the truth, Siddaramaiah said, "they only speak lies, they make issue out of non issue. Is there any issue in MUDA (site allotment case, in which he is accused and facing probe)? They wanted to make a non issue, an issue." Channapatna, Shiggaon and Sandur Assembly segments will go for by-polls on November 13.

The CM said he will go for campaigning in three assembly segments that will go for bypolls, from November 4 to 11.

He expressed confidence about Congress winning all the three segments.

Udupi, Nov 7: In a tragic turn of events, a young woman, Prasanna, aged 29, allegedly died by suicide on Wednesday, struggling to cope with the demands of work and motherhood after the birth of her daughter, according to police reports.

Prasanna had married on December 2, 2022, and was the mother of a 10-month-old baby girl. Her husband works in Bengaluru, while she lived with her in-laws, who, according to her family, treated her kindly.

In a complaint, Prasanna's mother revealed that her daughter often called her, expressing deep concerns over her readiness for motherhood. Despite receiving supportive care from her family, Prasanna felt unprepared and overwhelmed by the balance of work and home life that early motherhood required.

Her family shared that she had been undergoing treatment, but between 10 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday, she allegedly took her own life at her husband’s residence. The Karkala Rural Police Station has registered a case and is conducting further investigations.
