The condition of nine passengers including children and women is said to be critical. It is learnt that among the injured 12 persons have been shifted to KIMS in Hubli.
Both buses were damaged in the accident that occurred near KLS Engineering College on Khanapur – Talaguppa state highway on the outskirts of Haliyal town.
Sources said that the driver of the bus plying from Belgaum to Yellapur lost control over his vehicle and rammed into another bus plying from Dandeli to Hubli. The impact of the collision was such that the latter turned turtle and plunged into a gorge after moving about three metre in backward direction.
The NWKSRTC has announced a compensation of Rs. 5000 for those seriously injured and Rs. 2000 for those who sustained minor injuries.
Haliyal MLA Sunil Hegde, former minister R V Deshpande among others rushed to the spot soon after the accident.
