Mangalore, June 18: More than one acre of land in Maravoor near Bajpe on the outskirts of the city has been flooded following the collapse of a retaining wall attached to an under-construction vented dam.
Dozens of coconut and other trees have been uprooted and at least three houses in the area also have been partially collapsed due to the flash flood.
Oswald, a local resident said that he lost several coconut trees when 53 cents of his land was inundated. His house also was damaged in the incident.
It is learnt that the retaining wall collapsed due to excessive force when wooden logs and waste got stuck at the gate of the vented dam. The tragedy occurred around 4:30 am following the heavy overnight rains.
Immediately, water started gushing into nearby fields and coconut farms.
Police and fire fighters have rushed to the spot. The rescue operation is expected to start soon.
The under-construction vented dam was expected to provide water to over 13 villages.
Deputy Commissioner N S Channappa Gowda said that revenue officials have been asked to assess the damage caused by the flooding in many places across the district.
