Mangalore, June 19: The fears of residents of Melakoppala, Athrebailu and Kulur areas have come true with the rains coupled with the flooding caused by River Phalguni causing considerable damage to property on Tuesday.
Villagers of these areas had been protesting against the mud dumping carried out by MSEZL along the River Phalguni stating that it would cause flooding on the other side where their houses exist.
In Padushedde Kudru, one house has sustained severe damages while two others are in danger. The house belonging to John Francis D'Souza collapsed completely causing an estimated loss of about Rs. 50,000.
If rains and flooding continue their fury, nearby houses of Estin Clement D'Souza and Thomas John D'Souza may also meet the same fate. The locals are holding MSEZL responsible for the damages.
The mud dumped along the River by the company is bound to join the River owing to the heavy rains, thereby raising its level causing flooding on their side. If mud is not removed, water is likely to enter into their homes and farms, villagers say.
Although after the High Court has order, the company has stopped the road-cum-pipeline corridor work temporarily, the villagers continue to remain concerned as the mud still lies along the River.
