Mangalore, June 21: Empowerment of women is must for the development of villages, said Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat President K T Shailaja Bhat.
She was speaking during the inauguration of 'Grama Sabhe Janajagruti Karyakrama- 2012,' a week-long awareness programme on Grama Sabha, at the Zilla Panchayat complex premises in Mangalore on Thursday.
The programme is being organised by Janashikshana Trust and The Hunger Project in association with Apna Desh Association, Panchayat Raj institutions, Sugrama Sangha and Chittara Balaga, Mangalore.
Unveiling charts of the programme on the occasion, Ms Bhat said that creative participation of residents in Gram Sabha helps to finalise the list of beneficiaries for pension fund and fund for physically challenged in village-level.
The process of providing government facilities to rural people becomes easy,” she added.
Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Dr K N Vijayprakash unveiled the pamphlets about the awareness programme. He opined that the awareness programme is relevant, as Gram Sabhas are getting poor response.
Krishna Moolya of Jana Shikshana Trust said that the awareness programme is orgnised at Balepuni, Manchi, Ira, Kadeshwalya, Balthila and Amtadi Gram Panchayats on experimental basis. “The programme will be lead by Sugrama elected gram panchayat women members. They will speak on the importance of the grama sabha. Awareness programme will be held in schools and in different parts of the villages,” he added.
Jana Shikshana Trust Director Sheena Shetty, District Welfare Officer Arun Furtado, Presidents of different Gram Sabhas and various association members were present.
