Udupi, June 22: People of Hirebettu staged a protest against construction of a ready-mix concrete unit of CCCL company at Kanchinabailu area in their village near Manipal on Thursday.
They said that the construction of the unit would lead to widespread pollution in their village. Hirebettu had fertile land and agriculture was the main occupation of the people. Cement water from the unit would destroy paddy, coconut, arecanut and jasmine plantations and affect cultivation of vegetables.
Nearly 500 acres of land around the unit would be affected by air pollution. Discharge of cement water would lead to diseases among the cattle, they said.
The former MLA Vasanth Salian said the company had erred in constructing the unit without taking permission from Hirebettu gram panchayat. Zilla panchayat member Upendra Nayak said the company should shift its unit to the industrial area in Manipal or elsewhere.
Regional secretary of CCCL company Lakshminarayana and another representative of the company told the protestors that the company would respect their sentiments. It would adhere to the decision of the gram panchayat, they said.
President of Hirebettu gram panchayat Sharath Shetty said that the company had agreed to disband the unit from the village.
