Applications invited for Beary Academy awards

Mangalore, June 29: The Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy has invited applications for its annual honorary and book awards for the year 2011.

A media release issued here by Umarabba, Registrar of the Academy, stated that the honorary awards would be conferred on two individuals, who have done meritorious work in the field of Beary language, literature, arts and studies, and one person, who has appreciably served the field of Beary art.

The applications can be either submitted by the aspirants themselves, or their fans or followers. The applications received in the previous years will also be considered afresh. In case of such applications, additional or noteworthy information if any, may be furnished now. In the case of new applications, along with the introduction of the person concerned, all the information should be sent in the prescribed format of the Academy, which is available in the office of the academy. The application along with a recent photograph and copies of records may be sent either through post, or in person, to the office of the Academy, said the release.

Book Award

The applications for Book Awards 2011 can be submitted either by the author himself or by the publisher. Books published between January 1 and December 12 2011 will be considered for the award. The works of writers, who have bagged the reward once in the past, will not be considered for three consecutive years. Aspirants should submit four copies of the book along with the application.

Books that are translated from Beary to other languages, other languages into Beary language, poems, short stories, novels, epic poems, plays, and study works about Beary language, will also be considered.

The applications and four copies of works in covers super scribed 'Honorary Award – 2011 scheme' or Book Award-2011 scheme' should be sent to the president/registrar, Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy, Presidium Commercial Complex, Attavar, Nandigudda Road, Mangalore – 575001.

July 15 will be the last date for the submission of these applications, said the release.

Supreme Court raps Karnataka HC judge over ‘Pakistan’ and ‘undergarment’ remarks

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today sought a report from the Karnataka High Court over controversial remarks made by Justice Vedavyasachar Srishananda during a recent court hearing.

Justice Srishananda, while addressing a landlord-tenant dispute, referred to a Muslim-majority area in Bengaluru as "Pakistan" and made a misogynistic comment involving a woman lawyer.

A five-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, along with Justices S Khanna, B R Gavai, S Kant, and H Roy, expressed the need for establishing clear guidelines for constitutional court judges regarding their remarks in court.

The Supreme Court bench said that when social media plays an active role in monitoring and amplifying courtroom proceedings, there is an urgency to ensure judicial commentary aligns with the decorum expected from courts of law.

"Our attention has been drawn to some comments made by Karnataka High Court judge Justice V Srishananda during the conduct of judicial proceedings. We have asked the AG and SG to assist us. We ask the registrar general of the High Court to submit a report to this court after seeking administrative directions from the Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court. This exercise may be carried out in 2 weeks," the top court directed.

Videos of Justice Srishanananda have gone viral on social media.

In one video, he refers to a Muslim-dominated locality in Bengaluru as "Pakistan" and on another video he was seen making objectionable comments against a woman lawyer. In the second incident, Justice Srishanananda can be heard telling the woman lawyer that she seemed to know a lot about the "opposition party", so much so that she might be able to reveal the colour of their undergarments.
