Mangalore, June 30: Citizens under the banner of 'Jana Jala Vedike' organized a march for water as a protest against privatization of water resources and commercialization of water on Saturday.
The protestors gathered at Kankanady and procceded to Thumbe Dam site where they took a pledge that they will not allow government authorities to privatize the city's water resource.
Prasanna Heggodlu, renowned theatre and film personality, flagged off the 'jatha'. Speaking on the occasion he said that there is a need for people to come together and support pro-environment movements.
The protestors led by activist Vidya Dinker, expressed concerns that the city's water resources are being utilized in large quantities by companies such as MRPL. The government has assured water supply to MSEZL too, they said, expressing fears that the citizens would be deprived of their right to water if this trend continues.
The protestors proceeded to BC Road and Sarapady and created water privatization awareness.
