Mangalore, July 1: Three personalities serving in the media field were felicitated at a programme organized by Sandesha Foundation as part of the Kannada Press Day celebrations on Sunday.
Journalists Steevan Rego of 'Vijaya Karnataka', Laxmi Machhina of 'Udayavani' and Shahnaz M of 'Anupama' monthly were felicitated by the Foundation.
Speaking on the occasion P B Harish Rai, President, Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists' Association, said it was heartening to see Sandesha Foundation honour young journalists as opposed to the normal practice of felicitating veterans. The Foundation's move to honour Shahnaz M, a lady who has broken the barriers of the four walls of the house and contributed to the society with her writings, is indeed laudable, he said.
Pointing out that the day also happens to be 'World Doctors' Day', Mr. Rai said that while doctors look to eliminate diseases from human bodies, journalists try to eliminate diseases from within the society.
Remembering Hermann Mogling, the German missionary who came to Karnataka and started the first Kannada newspaper 'Mangalooru Samachaara' in 1843, Mr. Rai said that Mogling wanted newspapers be windows that drive away darkness and ignorance. Today however, most media are spreading darkness on the contrary, he lamented, adding that journalists must be impartial in their approach.
Media as a discipline has come a long way and today covers almost every field and walk of life. Newspapers have become a compact source of information and education. Stating that the job of media is to inform, educate and entertain, Mr. Rai said that not many media students are reading newspapers themselves to get themselves updated on the latest happenings and educate themselves.
Dr. Eugene Lobo, Director, Fatima Retreat House, shared his experiences working for the Vatican Radio with the gathering.
