Mangalore, July 2: The Mangalore City Corporation carried out a raid on the illegal paying guest accommodations and hostels in the city on Monday. The officials raided Expert PU College Hostel in Kodialbail, 'A' to 'Z' paying guest house in Bejai, RK hostel in Kodialguthu and Besant College hostel.
The officials raided the hostels as they did not have valid licence and were in an unhygienic condition. They raided Expert PU College hostel in the backdrop of the death of a girl student, recently died from dengue fever. On finding the hostel unclean, the officials warned the administration to maintain cleanliness. The kitchen staff too was not medically certified as per the norms.
Though Besant College hostel was closed down even before the raid, the officers found that the canteen was running without licence. No hostels were closed down during the raid, keeping in mind the well-being of the students.
MCC Joint Commissioner Srikanth Rao said that the hostels were raided following a decision in the Council's monthly meeting last week.
“The three hostels were run in violating the rules. There was no hygiene in the rooms and the kitchen and the students were accommodated in small rooms with no proper ventilation and other facilities. The hostel owners are running the hostel by obtaining the domestic licence and are earning huge profits. Moreover, the hostels lack hygiene and have turned out to be the breeding ground for mosquitoes,” he said.
He informed that the decision on imposing penalty or closing down the illegal PG's will be taken after convening a meeting with the Commissioner soon after he arrives to Mangalore.
The raids will continue in the days to come, he said.
