Mangala Seva Samiti honours waste collectors

Mangalore, July 9: Nearly Nearly 100 solid waste collectors and sweepers from a thanda at Huvinahadagali taluk of Bellary district who have been working in the city for the last two months were felicitated at the Bala Samrakshana Kendra in Kuthar on Sunday.

They were served with sumptuous food by the children of the kendra and activists of Mangala Seva Samiti, which runs the Kendra.

Deputy Speaker of the Assembly N. Yogish Bhat and Vishwa HIndu Parishad State vice-president M.B. Puranik were the guests. After lunch, the samiti held a formal functioin where the men were presented with dhoti whhile the women were given saris.

Earlier speaking to coastaldigest.com, a 40-year-old solid waste collector Mallesh, whose hands looked swollen because of wounds sustained while loading solid waste into the truck, said: "We have to endure it."

Solid waste collectors working in different parts of the city were brought to the kendra in two school buses.

Ramanagara, Sep 19: A case of rape, sexual harassment and criminal intimidation has been registered against BJP MLA Munirathna and six others, police said on Thursday.

It was registered following the complaint of a 40-year-old woman who alleged that the incident took place at a private resort within the Kaggalipura police station’s jurisdiction.

“We received a complaint on Wednesday night and based on it, we have registered case against seven people, including the BJP MLA under various sections for rape by public servant, sexual harassment, criminal intimidation, criminal conspiracy, voyeurism, intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace, Information Technology Act, and others,” a senior police officer said.

The matter is being investigated, he said.

The fresh FIR against the BJP MLA, also a former Minister, comes days after he was arrested by the Bengaluru Police in connection with the two cases filed against him for alleged harassment, threats and casteist abuse, police said.
