Mangalore, July 11: The members of Centre of Indian Trade Union (CITU) have demanded the Union government to fix Rs 10,000 as minimum wage for labourers according to 15th Indian labour conference, which has got approval again in 44th Indian labour conference recently.
Addressing protesters here in front of DC office on Tuesday demanding fulfilment of their various demands, CITU Vice President B Madhava alleged that the Union government is working for capitalists.
“Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has declared 10,000 crore dollars of financial support to IMF to solve financial crisis of western countries. Besides, European countries have received a concession of Rs 5000 lakh crores in India,” he said.
Referring to the contract labour system, Madahava said that the Contract Labour Prohibition Act should be enacted soon or the government should provide all rights of a permanent labourer to contract labourers.
He came down heavily on the Central government over price hike. He said that the UPA regime has increased the petrol price 18 times and never decreased the customs duty which has resulted in overall price hike.
CITU Secretary Sunil Kumar Bajal said that the government should provide land for labourers. “Contract labourers should have every facility like ID card, minimum wage and minimum pension of Rs 1500.
But it seems that the government has turned deaf ears for the problem of labourers. “In future, we will take out multi-day protests,” he said and added that they are in contact with labour organisations over the issue.
