Mangalore, July 13: He has a national level record in javelin throw against his name. He won the second place in long jump in the international athletics sports meet held in 2010 in Pune. He is now preparing for the international sports meet for senior citizens slated to be held in Sri Lanka from July 27.
Meet the 72 year old Jonathan Anand Soans, a resident of Mangalore staying in a small house in Jail Road. Even at this age, he wakes up early and carried out his exercises and sporting practices. Mr. Soans, in whose house one finds a treasure of medals and awards won in various sports events at state and national level, says this has been the secret behind his fitness and enthusiasm even at this age.
His lone daughter has been married off. He and his wife currently survive on the rent income generated by a petty shop. Owing to lack of funds and financial means, Mr. Soans has not been able to participate in many international sports events.
Mr. Soans, being a member of the UFCA, Mangalore, gets financial aid from the institution every now and then. But depending on it every single time is not something he likes. At times, he has borrowed interest loans to participate in foreign sports meets and struggle to repay them back, says he, and looks forward to people to encourage his talent and help him with financial aid to participate in more international sports events.
