Uppinagady, July 13: A group of Muslim girl students of Sri Ramakunjeshwar College at Ramakunja near here on Thursday boycotted classes and staged a protest demanding the College management to allow them to wear headscarf in front of male students and teachers in the classes.
The protesters accused the College management of deliberately curbing their religious rights in the pretext of uniform dress code. “We do not violate the dress code of the College, but, want to cover our entire body except the face and hands up to the wrist”, said one of the protesters.
They urged the College management to stop pursuing double standards while dealing with students.
A few days ago the Muslim girls of the College had submitted a memorandum to the management requesting to revoke ban on headscarf inside the College. However the management had rejected their demand.
Vasantha Rao, the principal of the College and KS Radhakrishna, the secretary of management committee have justified their stance to ban headscarf saying that students of all religions are equal for them.
“During the admission process we always clarify to the students and their parents about the dress code of the College. We are not implementing any new rules. The same students who had promised to abide by all our rules and regulation during the admission process, are now protesting against the rules of the College” they said.
