Kundapur, July 16: Another bid by the BJP leaders to pacify Haladi Srinivas Shetty, the BJP MLA, who has rebelled against the party and has decided to quit over being denied Cabinet berth, has come a cropper.
Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister S. Suresh Kumar held talks with the sulking local leader Haladi at the latter's residence in Kundapur on Monday, but had to return empty handed even after a two-hour discussion.
Speaking to reporters after emerging from the talks, Mr. Kumar said, “I have tried my best to convince him.”
He did not say anything about how the BJP MLA reacted. However, Mr. Shetty stuck to his gun and reiterated that he was stepping down as MLA.
“This is not a decision take in haste. I have pondered over it several times. I have enormous respect for Suresh Kumar. I also have the highest regard for A.G. Kodgi. But there is no change in my stand,” he said.
Haladi supporters have been on warpath since the third-time MLA was 'insulted' by the party leaders by denying cabinet berth despite being sounded out to attend the swearing in ceremony.
Haladi supporters also organized a bandh last week in Kundapur during which flags of BJP were burnt and the effigy of RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat was torched.
The MLA's supporters had also held a protest in Bangalore. Mr Bhat has been accused of playing caste politics and interfering in the affairs of the party.
