Mangalore, July 26: Grateful citizens of Mangalore on Thursday paid rich tributes to the martyrs of armed forces on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas.
An event was organised in the city by the Dakshina Kannada Ex-Service Association and the District Lions Club to remember the sacrifices of the heroes of Kargil war for the country.
Several ex-servicemen from this region, their family members along the others lit candles and offered flowers at the memorial in Kadri Hills.
Co. Nitteguthu Sharath Bhandary (rtd) said that 518 Indians were killed and 1,211 wounded in Kargil war. Four Param Vir Chakras were awarded after the war.
He recalled that on July 26, 1999 Inida's Armed Forces drove out Pakistan Army intruders from unauthorized occupation of Indian territory of Kargil, Drass, Tololing, Batalik and Turtok sectors in Kashmir.
The war was an example of great courage, valour, comradeship, sacrifces and leadership on the part of Indian Armed Forces, that this near impossible task was achieved with great finesse, he added.
