Vibrant Independence Day celebrations at GVNS

Shiruru, August 16: Independence Day flag hoisting ceremony and patriotic song singing competitions were held at Green Valley National School and Junior College on the occasion of Independence Day.

A special assembly was held in the quadrangle of the school with students and prefects displaying colorful pageantry. The Principal Mr. John Mathew hoisted the national flag. He was accompanied by all the staff and students. The flag song, flag Salute and the national anthem followed. Students had a variety of programmes highlighting the importance of the day. Assistant Head Boy Sunny Nayak welcomed the audience and the school prefect Mohamed Salem spoke on the importance of the day and highlighted the responsibility of students in upholding patriotic values and the need to join hands in nation building as responsible future citizens.

The Principal in his address requested the students to remember the sacrifices made by our great leaders in achieving freedom and become more responsible to value it and cherish it. He also advocated the students to realize the need for being more responsible and focused in realizing their importance as they would be the future custodians of our national unity, progress and development. He wanted the students to work hard as contributors in making India a global leader in the years to come. Ruksana M B of II PUC proposed the vote of thanks.

The flag hoisting ceremony was followed by a colourful patriotic song singing competition. All the four houses - Ruby, Sapphire, Diamond and Emerald participated in the junior and senior categories. Students sang melodious patriotic songs inspiring nationalistic feelings and pride for the country. Sapphire House stood first in the Junior Category and Diamond House stood first in the Senior Category.

In a heart-breaking incident, 19-year-old Shaun D'Souza, a native of Vittalwadi in Udupi's Kundapur taluk, tragically lost his life in the UAE due to heat stroke.

Shaun, the beloved son of Elias Cyril D'Souza and Pramila D'Souza, originally from Hosabettu, Moodbidri, had been pursuing his college education in the UAE.

He was admitted to a hospital in Ras Al Khaimah, approximately 115 km from Dubai, after collapsing from heatstroke. Despite receiving immediate medical attention, Shaun breathed his last on Sunday, September 15. 

He is deeply mourned by his parents and two siblings. The family, who had been residing near St. Mary's Church in the UAE, are grappling with the profound loss. Shaun’s father, Elias, works as a manager for a private company, while his mother, Pramila, is an accountant.

The local community has come together to offer their support and condolences in this time of sorrow.
