Zulekha, who lived with her two children near the Kayyar church, asked her husband, Jabbar, 50, to tie a rope to draw water from a nearby well. When Jabbar reached the 22-ft well, she allegedly pushed him into it, Kumbla Circle Inspector of Police T.P. Ranjith said.
Jabbar tried to hang on to a motor pipe but Zulekha cut it, and he drowned in the well, Mr. Ranjith said. Jabbar, who was employed in Mumbai, had returned home to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr with his family.
The incident which occurred Friday evening came to light when Zulekha alleged that her husband was killed by some of his colleagues who had come along with him from Mumbai, Mr. Ranjith said.
The police became suspicious when they saw the broken pipe. Following sustained interrogation, Zulekha confessed to committing the crime to get rid off her husband who was much elder to her.
Zulekha and Jabbar used to have altercations whenever he used to come home from Mumbai, he said. She was produced before a court here on Sunday.
