Mangalore, September 24: B Nagaraj Shetty, former minister and BJP man, was officially inducted into the Janata Dal (Secular) by H D Kumaraswamy, former Chief Minister, at a party convention held in Mangalore on Monday.

Speaking after donning JD(S) colours, Mr. Shetty said that he had not joined the party with an eye on any personal gain or position. “I reiterate that I have no intention of making any personal gains and am not interested in any post or position. I will travel across the district and work towards strengthening the party in each and every village”, he said.

Heaping praise on Mr. Kumaraswamy, in whose cabinet he had worked as a minister when the JD(S)-BJP coalition government was in power, Mr. Shetty said that he wishes to see the JDS strongman emerge as the Chief Minister yet again. He also denied that he has no business dealings with Mr. Kumaraswamy or his brother H D Revanna.

'Did mistakes, need guidance'

Stating that the BJP led state government is following the policy of divide and rule, Mr. Shetty said that Dakshina Kannada district's harmonious atmosphere has taken a beating. There is a need to establish harmony in the region and he will look to do just that as a JD(S) activist, he said. “People talk about my RSS background. I would want to make it clear that right from the beginning, we have been only taught to love everyone. I am a small man. There are seniors like Amarnath Shetty in the JD(S) who I will look up to. If I have committed mistakes, forgive me and guide me”, Mr. Shetty said.

Mr. Kumaraswamy in his address lauded the move made by Mr. Shetty to join JD(S). “He has left the post of President of a body which almost had a cabinet rank and joined a party which is not in power. It's a sacrifice”, Mr. Kumarswamy said.

Stating that it was people like Mr. Shetty who were responsible for bringing BJP to power in the state, Mr. Kumaraswamy said that contributions of the likes of Mr. Shetty have been neglected by leaders like B S Yeddyurappa. “Mr. Yeddyurappa feels it is because of him that BJP came to power in state. They forget the contributions of their activists. Mr. Shetty has left them and come to JD(S). This is just the beginning”, Mr. Kumaraswamy said.

The BJP administration has spread hatred in the society, Mr. Kumaraswamy said, urging the people of the state to realise the importance of living in harmony. “Why should the Hindus hate Muslims? They need to realise that many Hindus are earning and living peacefully in Gulf countries”, he said.

Police knew about Homestay attack

Mr. Kumaraswamy, in an apparent reference to the homestay attack, said that the police was aware of the incident beforehand. “The police know about all illegal activities that take place. They allow them to happen as long as they are paid their monthly quota of money by them. But when mediapersons expose their defects and unveil illegal activities happening in the society, they slap cases against mediapersons in return”, he said.

Other JDS leaders such as Zameer Ahmed Khan, Amarnath Shetty, Madhu Bangarappa, M G Hegde, M B Sadashiva, D M Aslam were present among others.

In a heartbreaking incident, a beautiful journey of love and new beginnings was abruptly shattered by a tragic accident on the Mangaluru-Bengaluru highway at Talapady in Bantwal taluk on Saturday, September 7.

Manasa, a newlywed bride, lost her life in a devastating car accident, leaving her husband, Aneesh Krishna, critically injured.

The couple, who had just begun their marital journey on September 5, was returning from a temple visit to settle dues when fate took a cruel turn. Their Alto car, in which they were traveling from B C Road towards Mangaluru, skidded off course after the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to jump the divider and collide head-on with a KSRTC bus.

In the blink of an eye, their world crumbled. The impact was so severe that their car was left mangled, with Manasa tragically losing her life at the scene. Aneesh, fighting for his life, has been rushed to a private hospital in Mangaluru.

Manasa and Aneesh, both professionals working in a private company in Mangaluru, had dreams of a life together, filled with shared moments and cherished memories. The couple's love story, celebrated just days ago with their wedding at the Denthadka Temple, now echoes in the hearts of their grieving families, forever marred by this tragic accident.

The Melkar police arrived swiftly at the scene and have begun their investigation, hoping to bring clarity to this devastating event.

In the aftermath of this tragic accident, the community mourns the loss of a young bride and prays for the recovery of a husband left fighting for his life.

Mangaluru: The block level and District Congress Committee presidents in the state will be changed in the next one month for better reach into society and bring in organisational fortification, said Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee working president G C Chandrasheker on Saturday.

The All India Congress Committee and KPCC have a vision for bringing a change in how the party works with the last man and woman in the state, he said at a press conference here.

"We are looking at bringing development models into the state with a new vision. We are a party that likes to work with the opposition in the developmental aspects and keep all other matters away that do not relate to the development of the state.

"We have a great respect for the people of the coast who are considered to be forward-looking and perceptible, but it is also true that we do not have the numbers in the upper house and in the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs)," he said.

"Our endeavour is to not only create a strong pro-development workforce at the base level by strengthening the second and third level leadership in the state," he said.

Chandrasheker, who is also a Rajya Sabha member, said that he and his four colleagues of the rank of working presidents of the KPCC are going to every district to infuse the new thinking in our workers and leaders.

"This move will get a new surge considering the party is facing byelections in Shiggaon, Chennapatna and Sandhur segments and also vacant seats in the legislative council, followed by elections to the Urban Local Bodies and Panchayats" he said.

When asked about the reason for the changes, Chandrashekar said most of the people have already lived their tenures. The party wants to reward those who have not been given tickets to contest in the 2023 state assembly elections and 2024 Lok Sabha elections for political reasons.

There are quite good leaders and hard-working ground level workers who have great potential to lead the party in the coming years, he said.

"Women will get at least one top post in all District Congress Committees and block levels. There is also a move to give responsible positions for the workers and leaders coming from different strata of society, which are deliverable. The party will not shy away from it," he said.

The other two working presidents, Dr Manjunath Bhandary and Vasanth Kumar, were also present at the press conference.

Kumar said some of the regions in the state are dominated by the BJP. "We want to end this run and defeat the divisive models of the BJP." Bhandary said the Indian National Congress was aiming at a high development phase in the state and involve the opposition parties and their leaders in the development plans in the state.
