Mangalore, September 24: The New Mangalore Port for the first time handled 10,000 bags of salt for local distribution in Mangalore.
M V All Cargo Arati carrying 400 metric tonnes of salt from Kandla Port (coastal cargo) called at NMP on Sunday and after discharging the entire consignment sailed out on Monday.
The consignment consisting of various types of salt like free flow loose salt, Ankur laminated salt, Annapoorna Laminated salt, Iodised salt, etc. have been brought by the distributor of salt for local consumption. M/s. Sri Ganesh Shipping Agency were the Stevedoring, C&F & handling agents.
Dr. P. Tamilvanan, Chairman, NMPT stated that the Port is making all out efforts to attract and enhance the volume of coastal cargo which has resulted in the flow of diversified cargo to the Port.
He said, NMPT was serving the Nation by handling LPG, edible oil, cereals, fertilisers Kerosene oil, diesel and now salt which are very essential for the common man. The Port has so far handled 16.04 million metric tonnes of cargo during the current year 2012-13 as against 15.63 million metric tonnes handled during the corresponding period of previous year with a growth rate of 2.63%.
