The convention, named as Karnataka Yuvajanotsava 2012 is being organized by the Youth Commission of Karnataka Regional Catholic Bishops' Council and locally hosted by the Indian Catholic Youth Movement of the Diocese of Belthangady.
Speaking after inaugurating the convention on the premises of Holy Redeemer Church, here, Dr Henry D'Souza, Bishop of Bellary called upon the youth to cultivate the qualities of leadership and become torch bearers of change in society.
Rev Lawrence Mukkazhy hoisted the national flag. Fr Faustine Lobo, national director of Pontifical Mission Societies, delivered the keynote address.
Fr Franklin Dsouza, national secretary of CBCI youth office and Rev Geevarghese Mar Divannasios, bishop of Puttur were present on the occasion.
According to organisers, over 1,500 youth leaders from all over the state are participating in the two-day leadership programme which will end with a peace rally of over 5,000 youth on the third and last day, that is September 30. The convention theme is 'Transformed by Faith - transforming the world-networking-human dignity-employability-caring for the Earth.'
During the convention, five young achievers will be awarded Karnataka Yuva Catholic Ratna Awards. The awardees are Roshan Ferrao from Mangalore, Sabita Monis from Moodbidri, Cajetan Dias and Jose Jacob from Bangalore, and DB Tech, a training programme for rural unemployed youth.
