Bhatkal, October 1: A delegation from the Majlis-e-Islah-o-Tanzeem met MLA J D Naik urging him to raise in the Assembly the issue of Bhatkal's name being defamed by a Kannada daily through faulty reports of terror-related activities.
Mohiddin Althaf Kharoori, Chief Secretary of the Tanzeem, brought to the notice of the MLA the articles published in the daily showing the town of Bhatkal in negative light and carrying baseless reports pertaining to terror-related activities in the town.
Although an appeal in this regard was submitted to the district SP and the Deputy Commissioner of the district in Karwar, no action has been taken against the daily so far, he said, and appealed to Mr. Naik to raise the matter in the state Assembly in his capacity as a member of the opposition.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Naik said that people have been losing faith in media of late owing to their faulty reports. Media are not carrying out their responsibility in the right spirit, he said, suggesting that cases should be booked against such media and drag them to court, or file a complaint with the Press Council of India.
Syed Mohiddin Barmavar, Former President of the Tanzeem, said that in the next three days, cases will be booked against the daily and its reporter.
'Bhatkal Bundh'
Demanding action against the newspaper and its reporter for publishing false reports about the Muslim community of Bhatkal, the Tanzeem has called for a 'Bhatkal Bundh' in the first week of October, Mr. Kharoori said.
Mr. Naik has already expressed his support for the 'Bundh' besides Bhatkala Nagarika Hitarakshana Samithi. Other leaders from the Hindu community must also join hands in making the bundh successful, he appealed.
