Mangalore, September 30: At least two persons were killed and eight others sustained severe injuries when a pickup van fell off a railway over-bridge at Baikampady on the outskirts of the city Sunday night.
The deceased have been identified as driver Harish and labourer Ramesh.
The injured workers have been admitted to a private hospital in the city. According to sources all of them are construction workers belonging to Mangalore Special Economic Zone and hailed from Soraba taluk of Shimoga district.
The tragedy occurred around 10 pm when the driver lost control of his speeding vehicle while avoiding a collision with an oncoming vehicle.
It is learnt that the van was carrying around 10 construction workers from the construction site at Baikampady Industrial Area to their rooms in Kulai. A case has been registered at Panambur Police Station.
The MSEZ has employed around 25,000 labourers for civil and other construction work. It could be recalled here that as many as nine MSEZ labourers were killed in a similar road accident at Jokatte here on May 6.
