Mangalore, October 1: Members of Dakshina Kannada district Youth Congress staged a protest on Monday in front of the MESCOM Office in Pandeshwar, here against the irregular supply of electricity and power cuts in the region.
Addressing the agitators, Ivan D'Souza, Secretary of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, said that the BJP-led state government had been unsuccessful in keeping its promise of providing free electricity to the farmers of the state. “All their promises are false. From the time the BJP came to power, the state has been hit by regular power cuts which caused a great deal of inconvenience and difficulties to small-scale industries, cottage industries, manufacturers and in households”, he said.
Mithun Rai, DK district Youth Congress President said that State Government had not worked out any solutions for the problem caused by irregular supply of electricity. The government has been unable to provide free electricity to farmers and the poor. At the time of approaching exams, students face difficulties due to increasing power cuts. In such a situation, how they can study, he demanded.
He said that they would intensify their protest if the situation remained the same and would resort to struggle. He also demanded that Minister for Energy Shobha Karandlaje ought to resign from her post.
Mr Rai also said that the State Youth Congress would protest in front of over 400 MESCOM offices across Karnataka.
Youth Congress leaders Praveen Alva, Tejaswi Raj, Arun Coelho, Merril Rego and others were present.
