Mangalore, October 4: The Air Cargo Complex at Mangalore Airport proposal is before higher authorities and a notification in this regard would be issued soon, said D Purushotham, Commissioner of Customs, Mangalore.
He was speaking at a programme organized at the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) in Mangalore on Thursday.
Admitting that there have been instances where custom officials have harassed air passengers at airports, Mr. Purushotham said that there are black sheep in every department and his department is no exception. In case of any complaint, passengers could approach him or get in touch with the grievance redressal cell set up at his office, he said.
Baggage rules
A presentation was made on baggage rules applicable for import of accompanied baggage on arrival and departure of passengers at the airports.
On arrival, jewellery is allowed free up to aggregate value of Rs.10,000 for male passengers and up to Rs.20,000 for lady passengers residing abroad for over one year. Articles of value up to Rs. 35,000 (excluding jewelery) is allowed free of duty for passengers of age 10 years and above and up to Rs. 15,000 (excluding jewellery) for passengers below 10 years. One laptop is allowed free of duty over and above the applicable free allowance for a person of 18 years and above. Indian currency up to Rs. 7,500 is allowed for passengers coming from abroad who are resident in India. Foreign currency has been brought under 'without limit' category. However, declaration has to be made in the currency declaration form where the value of foreign currency exceeds US $ 5,000 or equivalent. In case of foreign exchange, the declaration is to be made if the aggregate value exceeds US $ 10,000 or equivalent.
The goods of value over and above the applicable free allowance shall be chargeable to customs duty at 35% advalorem and Cess at 3% on customs duty. The effective rate of duty is 35.05% in total.
The duty is to be paid in convertible foreign currency. Not more than one kg of gold and ten kgs of silver is allowed to be imported.
