Bhatkal, October 10: A tense atmosphere prevailed in the coastal town of Bhatkal after a 6-year-old girl was brutally raped and attacked by a man on Tuesday night.
The accused Shridhar Naika, a resident of Puravarga Mugalihonda near here, was arrested by Bhatkal police and booked under IPC section 376 for rape attempt, sources said.
After lodging complaint, the minor was admitted to a hospital for treatment, said Assistant Superintendent of Police of Uttara Kannada district Sudhir Kumar.
As the news began to spreading like wild fire in the town, hundreds of people annoyed over brutal incident, gheraoed the local police station and staged a mammoth demonstration seeking harsh punishment for the accused.
Majlis-e-Islah-o-Tanzeem general secretary Muhiuddin Althaf Kharoori, vice president S M Sayyad Parvez, Bhatkal Town Municipal Council Members Sana'ullah Gavayi, Muhammad Sadi Matta among other local leaders rushed to the police station to control the mob.
The incident happened when a girl from the family of accused had taken home the six-year-old girl to play with them, said victim's father Mahmoud.
The girl, who returned home crying with torn dress revealed her parents about the incident. When the members of local Azad Youth Club, came to know about the incident, they tried to storm into the house of accused. Meanwhile, the police rushed to the spot and arrested the accused.
ASP Sudhir Kumar is investigating the case.
