Mangalore, October 11: Four prominent organisations - Jagotik Konknni Songhotton (JKS), Konkani Prachar Sanchalan, Mandd Sobhann and Nach Sobhann (a wing of Mandd Sobhann), will organise first All-India Konkani dance contest, 'Yaya Ind-ya Mayaya', for people between the ages of 15 and 35.
Announcing this at Press Club here on Thursday, Eric Ozario, Convenor of organising committee said that the contest has been organised to promote Konkani dance and to encourage young talent.
“Anyone can participate in the dance contest, which will be held in group and duet categories. It is not limited only to Konkani speakers” he said.
Auditions will be held in January and February next year at seven centres such as Mangalore, Udupi, Mumbai, Goa, Bangalore, Honnavar and Kasaragod. The semi-final and final rounds of the contest will be held at Kalaangann, Mangalore on May 18 and 19, 2013 respectively. The only rule for the participants is that they perform for a Konkani song, but are otherwise free to display any genre or style of dance. Only one round in the finale would have to be a folk dance, he said.
Mr Ozario said that the participants would have to incur very little expenses, as the organiser would provide for their food, accommodation and travel expenses. The dancers would have to pay only for their costumes and registration, he said.
Prizes worth over Rs 5 lakh would be given away during the contest. The cash prize for winners in group category is Rs 2 lakh while it is Rs 50,000 for winners in duet category. The last date for registration is December 31, he added.
President of Konkani Prachar Sanchalan Roy Castelino, president of Mandd Sobhann Stany Alvares, vice-president of JKS Louis Pinto and leader of Nach Sobhann Avil D'Cruz were present at the press meet.
