Coupled with thunder and lightning, the heavy downpour caused loss of life and damaged many houses on the outskirts of the city and other parts of Dakshina Kananda district.
According to sources, lightning claimed a life in Venoor village of Belthangady taluk. The deceased has been identified as Mohammed (18).
The downpour, however, failed to lift the spirits of people of the city. Hundreds of devotees and vehicles participated in the 'hore-kanike' procession of Kudroli Gokarnanatheshwara Temple, which passed through the city streets amidst rains.
Although the weather was pleasant when the procession started, devotees faced rain after they reached Lady Hill.
While commuters and pedestrians had a tough time wading through water, 'Mangaluru Dasara' shoppers thronging the numerous markets were left disappointed.
The clouds and rains also brought down the temperature of the city making the weather pleasant. The Met has predicted scattered rain in coastal Karnataka.
Triggered by a trough of low pressure, the downpour started at 6:30 p.m. and continued for at least the next three hours. By then, it had left many areas of the city under water.
