Bhatkal, October 16: Ankola police have arrested five youths on charges of illegal cattle transportation and seized cattle laden-lorry which had been heading to Bhatkal.
Three among the arrested are from Bhatkal. The police have arrested the lorry driver Abiood Wahab (23) originally from Hubballi Meghanagar in Savanoor, cleaner Ramesh Siddappa Urulugatti from Raichur, Mohammed Salman (22), Mohammed Awoob Abu Mohammed Hyder (24) and Saroj Hussain (25) from Bunder.
Patrolling at night, police saw a lorry near Baleguli covered with tarpaulin in a suspicious manner and signaled it to stop in the wee hours of Monday. However, instead of stopping, when the lorry picked up speed, the police team began pursuing it. Having notified to block the road near JC College, a barrier was set up and the lorry was brought to a stop.
It is learnt that the lorry had been plying from Dharwad and the cattle were being taken to Bhatkal.
A Chevrolet Tavera had been travelling along with the lorry which was transporting twelve bulls, guiding it on the movement of police, sources said.
