In the backdrop of Bakrid festivities, VHP activists had been blocking transportation of cattle in various places resulting in minor quarrels as well. In one such instance, the police had taken into custody a few Hindutva activists. RSS activists had held a protest alleging that the police had assaulted them while in custody. In response, a few Dalit organisations and Congress leaders also protested demanding action against Sangh Parivar activists for taking law into their hands.
Pro-Hindu organisations held a protest in front of Old Hubli Police Station on Friday against the police department, demanding suspension of police officers who allegedly assaulted Hindutva activists. This led to heated verbal exchanges between Hindutva activists and the police and the VHP also warned of an agitation against the police.
A senior police officer was reportedly unhappy about the behaviour of the lower level officers and directed them to meet RSS leaders and seek apology. In adherence to the order, the officers met RSS leaders at 'Keshava Kunja', and discussed the issue for about 45 minutes asking them to drop their protests against the police, it is learnt. But the RSS leaders were not satisfied and will settle for nothing less than action against the police officers in question and hence they had to return back empty handed, it is said.
The police department has decided to transfer two police inspectors and suspend a constable in this regard, it is learnt.
