Mangalore, November 3: Doddakamaiah, who was the assistant superintendent in Tumkur jail, has taken over as the new superintendent of Mangalore person.
The development comes after Mangalore prison superintendent P S Ambekar's sudden transfer to Udupi district jail following the recent communal clashes between two groups of inmates.
On assuming his new post, Mr Doddakamaiah said that managing under-trials and certifying less friction was not an easy job.
Following the suspension of jail warden Puttanna, the post has fallen vacant and no appointment has been made yet.
The Department of Prisons on Wednesday relocated 290 male undertrials to the new jail building amidst tight security following sudden clashes between under-trials inside the barracks. 12 women under-trials were retained in the old prison building.
With 12 barracks in the newly-built structure which has the capacity to accommodate over 400 inmates, there would not be any shortage of space for under-trials, according to prison sources.
Provision of facilities such as power, water and gas connections has been ensured. As the district administration has handed over 63 acres at Chelur village in Bantwal taluk, the plan of constructing a new district prison on the outskirts of Mangalore city has not been called off.
The Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) has been approached by the district administration to allot additional land to the proposal as it required 100 acres.
