Mangalore, November 4: Giving priority to beauty while choosing life-partner is the root cause of the family chaos in modern times, said Udupi Qazi Ibrahim Musliyar Bekal.

He was speaking after inaugurating the mass marriage organised by Abu Dhabi based Bearys Welfare Forum at Milagres Hall in the city on Sunday.

Recalling Prophet Muhammad's marriage tips that “A woman is married for four reasons: her wealth, her family status, her beauty and her religiosity. Choose (marry) the religious woman so that your home will be in abundance”, Musliyar said if any Muslim man ignored this hadith while choosing a life partner, he would not attain success.

Mangalore Qazi Thwaka Ahmed Musliyar said that lack of religiosity leads to destruction of family values.

“The reason behind dowry menace is also people's ignorance about Islamic teachings,” he said adding that there is solution for all the problems of man's life in Islam.

Speaking on the occasion former higher education minister B A Mohidin pointed out that mass marriages cannot be the permanent solution for dowry menace. “We need to eradicate the root cause of the dowry”, he said.

The programme commenced with the recitation of Quranic verses by Rahil, a student of Iqra Arabic School, Mangalore. Mohammad Rafeeq Krishnapur welcomed the gathering. Abdullah Madumoole gave a brief introduction about the activities of BWF. Basheer Bajpe unveiled the future plans of the Forum.

BWF president Mohammad Ali Uchil presided over. Umar U H proposed vote of thanks. B A Mohammad Ali compered the programme. MLA U T Khader, Y Sudhir Shetty, Althaf Khatheeb, S M Rashid, Mohammad Badruddin, B M Mumthaz Ali, Muhammad Ameen and B M Shareef were present among others.

As many as 16 couples entered marital life in the presence of dignitaries. Qazis led the 'Nikah' proceedings.

This is the fourth mass wedding ceremony organised by BWF, which is currently celebrating its decennial year.

Based in Abu Dhabi, BWF is a union of expat Bearys hailing from coastal Karnataka. Social service, special encouragement to education, awards and felicitations for talented people and achievers are some of the activities of the organisation.

With its anti-dowry stance, BWF had organised mass weddings for the poor in 2008, 2009 and 2011 too. A total of 58 couples have been married off by the organisation till now.

Bengaluru: Following allegations by a section of farmers from Vijayapura district that their lands were marked as Waqf properties, Karnataka Chief Minister Sidddaramaiah on Tuesday said none of them will be evicted, and notices issued to them will be withdrawn.

"No farmer will be evicted from their land. Yesterday Revenue Minister (Krishna Byre Gowda), M B Patil (Industries and Vijayapura district in-charge Minister) and Waqf Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan have jointly said that no farmer from Vijayapura will be evicted from their land," Siddaramaiah said.

Speaking to reporters here, he said in case notices have been issued to farmers, they will be withdrawn.

Responding to a question that similar notices have been issued to farmers in Yadgir and Dharwad districts too, the CM said: "I will ask the Revenue Minister to look into it, nowhere farmers will be evicted."

Seeking to clarify "confusion" over 1,200 acres in Honavada of Tikota taluk being marked as Waqf property, M B Patil had recently said it was due to an “error” in the gazette notification.

He also had said only 11 acres out of the 1,200 acres are Waqf properties, and a task force headed by the Deputy Commissioner will be formed to resolve the issues.

Udupi, Nov 11: The Karkala town police in Udupi have arrested Krishna Naik, the sculptor responsible for installing a 33-foot Parashurama statue at Umikkal Hill in Bailur, Karkala taluk.

Naik, the owner of Krish Art World and a resident of Bengaluru's Visvesvaraya Layout, was apprehended in Mahe, part of the Union Territory of Puducherry, for allegedly substituting a look-alike statue in place of a genuine bronze figure at the Parashurama Theme Park in Karkala.

Udupi Superintendent of Police Dr. Arun K confirmed the arrest, stating that Naik faces charges under Sections 420 (cheating) and 409 (criminal breach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code.

This legal action followed a complaint lodged in June by Krishna Shetty, a resident of Nallur village, Karkala. Shetty claimed that Naik had received a payment of ₹1,25,50,000 from Udupi Nirmithi Kendra for the installation of a bronze Parashurama statue. However, Naik allegedly deceived the government by installing a replica instead.

The statue was unveiled on January 27, 2023, by then Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai. Current Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has since ordered a CID investigation to probe deeper into the alleged fraud surrounding the statue's installation at the theme park.

Mangaluru: In a deeply tragic turn of events, a 28-year-old woman named Ranjitha, who had recently given birth but tragically lost her newborn, ended her life by suicide on Monday. She reportedly leapt from the fourth-floor window of Lady Goschen Hospital’s luggage room.

Ranjitha, whose strength and resilience had carried her through a difficult pregnancy, was scheduled for discharge on Monday. Her journey to Lady Goschen Hospital began on October 24, when she was transferred from Karkala. She was a high-risk patient, battling both hypertension and diabetes. At the time of her admission, she was just 27 weeks pregnant.

Due to the complexities of her health, doctors made the difficult decision to perform an emergency C-section on October 30. She delivered a baby girl, premature and weighing only 960 grams. The newborn was immediately moved to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, where doctors did all they could. Despite these efforts, the baby passed away on November 3.

Ranjitha’s sorrow was profound. She stayed under hospital care even after her initial recovery and was preparing to go home on November 9. She had even requested a couple more days at the hospital, seeking time perhaps to cope with her unimaginable grief.

On the day of her discharge, a discharge card ready and her family eagerly waiting to take her home, Ranjitha reportedly made her way to the luggage room in the early hours. There, standing on a cot placed for patients' family members, she climbed to a window and fell from the fourth floor. Despite the attempts of another visitor to intervene, tragedy was inevitable. She was rushed to Government Wenlock Hospital, where doctors confirmed the worst—she was no more.

Dr. Durgaparasad M R, the Medical Superintendent at Lady Goschen Hospital, shared his grief and spoke of the ongoing investigation. A post-mortem is to be conducted, and the local Tahsildar will complete the necessary inquest procedures. Ranjitha’s exact reasons for taking this step are yet to be confirmed, though the weight of her recent losses paints a sorrowful picture.
