Mangalore, November 16: A conspiracy is being hatched to shift the proposed construction of Ambedkar Bhavan to Urwa market area from the earlier earmarked site at Derebail. If any attempt is made to shift the Ambedkar Bhavan to another place, it will be an insult to Dr. B R Ambedkar which will not be tolerated by Dalits, said M Devdas, State Convenor, Karnataka Dalitha Sangharsha Samiti (DSS).
Addressing media persons at a press meet in Mangalore on Friday, Mr. Devdas said that although 1.61 acres of land (Survey No.178/1) in Derebail ward was identified for Ambedkar Bhavan by Former Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav, besides preparing a blue print for the same, plans are being made now to shift the site to another place near Urwa market, he said, blaming Yogish Bhat, Deputy Speaker, Karnataka Legislative Assembly of conspiring the move.
“He (Mr. Bhat) is behind it. When the district administration had already okayed it to come up in Derebail, what is the need for Mr. Bhat to interfere. They want to give the Rangamandira land to us and occupy the land originally earmarked for Ambedkar Bhavan. Reasons like park and demand made by an educational institution etc are being given for the shift of project. The current Deputy Commissioner is also dancing on the tunes of the politicians. The original earmarked land is convenient in terms of bus connectivity and other aspects while the new proposed site is not. The Ambedkar Bhavan has to be set up at the same place which was earmarked earlier. If not, all Dalit organisations will jointly protest the move”, he said.
Ambedkar Bhavan has been set up in different districts of the state and Dakshina Kannada is yet to have its Ambedkar Bhavan, he pointed out.
'Release Naveen Soorinje'
The Dalit leaders on the occasion condemned the arrest of journalist Naveen Soorinje in connection with the homestay attack case and demanded that he be released immediately.
