Mangalore, November 19: The New Mangalore Port has so far handled 22. 29 million tonnes of cargo during the current year 2012-13 as against 19.65 million tonnes handled during the corresponding period of previous year with a growth rate of 13.43%.
A media release issued here by the NMPT stated that the increase in the handling of POL crude and Products, Coal, fertilizers, etc. has contributed the growth in traffic.
The cruise season will be commenced on November 24, with the arrival of two cruise vessels. So far 14 calls are confirmed and more are expected.
Dr. P. Tamilvanan, Chairman, NMPT, has attributed the overall increase in traffic to the pro-active marketing strategy adopted by the Port coupled with the latest infrastructure addition like more deep draft berths, storage sheds, handling equipment, floating crafts, concrete roads, etc.
Chairman thanks Shimoga exporters
While addressing the Shimoga exporters and directors of Shimoga Chamber of Commerce at Industry at the Chamber hall in Shimoga recently Dr Tamilvanan expressed his gratitude for mobilizing machinery through New Mangalore Port for export.
Pearlite Lines, a major manufacturer of machinery parts in Shimoga, has diverted 16 containers stuffed with machinery parts through New Mangalore Port for export to Italy, Germany and England.
Dr Tamilvanan has also visited the factory and held discussion with the management and they in turn has given assurance for using NMPT for their future exports.
Mahendrappa, President, Shimoga District Chamber of Commerce and Industry urged the importers and exporters of Shimoga to utilize the facilities available at the New Mangalore Port, the gateway port of Karnataka.
The chairman recalled the earlier trade meet and export training programmes held at Shimoga, where large volume of cargo viz., Maize, agro products, Machinery, containerized cargo, Sugar, etc. is being generated for export. This has yielded positive results and more exporters have expressed their interest in diverting their cargo through New Mangalore Port.
