Mangalore, November 28: Management committees of several madrasas, owing allegiance to Samastha Kerala Islam Vidyabhyasa Board, in Dakshina Kannada district have strongly opposed the state government's move to impose syllabus that is not of their choice.

Recent series of circulars issued by ministers concerned has rankled the managements of madrassas to the extent that they have threatened to launch mass protests if the government fails to rescind its orders within a reasonable time.

K L Umar Darimi of the Dakshina Kannada District Madarassa Management Association told reporters here that state government acting on the advice of local BJP leaders is trying to force madrassas to adopt syllabus that is not of their choice.

"The issue of syllabus should be left to local jamaaths and not dictated to us by the government from whom we do not receive any financial aid," he said.

Referring to a circular issued by S K Bellubbi, minister for agriculture marketing, haj and wakf which said five madrassas in Dakshina Kannada coming under Samastha should follow syllabus prescribed by Islamic Education Board, Umar Darimi said these madrassas have since 1951 been following syllabus prescribed by the Samastha Board. The copy of the circular has also been marked to the district administration and the police here for compliance.

TM Shahid, member, Coir Board said a section of Muslim leaders within the BJP, and wakf board members are playing a game of divide and rule. They are using the state machinery to bring pressure on five madrassas to brow beat managements into accepting the government's dictat, he said, adding they will be forced to launch an agitation if such blatant interference in madrasssa affairs did not stop.
