The case was registered on Thursday based on a complaint lodged by Sukesh Kumar, a resident of Melanthabettu village, and a devotee of Shree Kshetra Dharmasthala.
The development comes after the warning by many local leaders against the linking Saujanya rape and murder case to Dharmasthala temple and Dharmadhikari D Veerendra Heggade.
According to the complainant the accused was spreading SMSs describing Heggade as 'Dharmasthala King.' Such MMSs were also sent to Heggade's family members.
The SMSs targeting Heggade were doing rounds and originating from mobile number 9448287050.
The recent press statement released by Mr Nayak was also damaging the reputation of Dharmasthala temple, the complainant charged.
The case has been registered under sections 295(A), 505(1) IPC and sections 66 A of IT Act 2000.
