Mangalore, December 8: Contrary to the approach and ideas of Swami Vivekananda, the priestly class is controlling the society and the entire political system even today said J H Narayan Swami, thinker.
He was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of a state level seminar organized as part of Swami Vivekananda's 150th birth anniversary in Mangalore on Saturday.
The clergy have always controlled society and exercised power. Swami Vivekananda was against it but the clergy still call the shots in politics and control the system as is evident with the case of Lingayat seers influencing former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa, he said.
Stating that Kuvempu was also on the same wavelength as that of Swami Vivekananda in terms of global unity of mankind, Mr. Swami said that he too was criticized by the likes of Masti Venkatesh Iyengar and others which was also an example of the impact of clergy on the society. The wealth found in Anantha Padmanabha temple also shows the kind of impact they had on the society, he added.
The name and image of Swami Vivekananda is being used by the Sangh Parivar for their communal agenda and misguiding youth while in fact his ideas were completely different, Mr. Swami said. Youth of today must understand the real message and approach of Swami Vivekananda, he advised.
Dinesh Amin Mattu, senior journalist, Yashwant Maroli, senior advocate, Ananth Naik, State President, Students Federation of India (SFI) were present among others.
