Mangalore, December 22: A labourer engaged in UGD pipe connection work, under the ADB funded KUDCEMP project died after being washed away in water, at Simon Lane, Naguri, on outskirts of the city on Saturday evening.
The deceased has been identified as Raju (24) from Andhra Pradesh. According to sources, Raju, along with three other workers was working on the drainage connection work at Naguri while a JCB machine was lifting mud at an adjacent site. The JCB machine accidently hit the water pipeline underneath leading to the sudden and spontaneous surge of water at great force.
The gushing water washed away the four workers. While the three managed to escape, Raju was stuck in the gushing water.
According to eyewitnesses though other labourers tried to rescue the victim, he died of asphyxiation.
Fire personnel and police rushed to the spot and managed to recover the body of the deceased from the drain.
Local coporator Jacintha Boromeo, said that the work on connecting the drainage pipes had commenced on December 17, and was expected to finish on Saturday.
MCC Commissioner Dr Harish Kumar said that police and KUDCEMP MD have been intimated on the mishap. A company named Sriram was given the contract to connect the pipes to UGD.
