Udupi, December 23: Demanding the abolition of the practice of “made snana” at Kukke Subrahmanya temple and “pankti bheda” at Sri Krishna Mutt/Temple and 'Ashta Mutts', the Communist Party of India (Marxist) will organise a protest here on December 27.
“Made snana” is a ritual in which people from lower castes roll over the plantain leaves containing food left behind by Brahmins after their meal.
“Pankti bheda” means separate seating arrangements for Brahmins and non-Brahmins when meals are served at temples.
K. Shankar, president of the district unit of CPI(M), told presspersons here on Saturday that in order to create awareness on the twin issues, a “jatha” had started from Kukke Subrahmanya in Dakshina Kannada district on December 21 while another “jatha” would begin from Byndoor on December 24.
Both these processions would culminate in Udupi where a large number of CPI (M) leaders and workers would participate in the protest meeting.
A separate public meeting would be held near the Martyr's Memorial at Ajjarkad on the same day. CPI(M) politburo members B.V. Raghavalu and M.A. Baby would participate in both the meetings.
“Pankti bheda” is being practised in 250 temples coming under the Muzrai Department. “Kota Srinivas Poojary, Minister for Ports and Muzrai, should explain what action he has taken to prevent this discriminatory practice in temples,” he said.
A law should be passed banning discriminatory practices such as “made snana” and “pankti bheda”, Mr. Shankar said.
CPI(M) leaders Balakrishna Shetty, P. Vishwanath Rai, Dogu Suvarna, and Venkatesh Koni were present.
