Mangalore, December 28: An emergency-like situation has been prevailing in Karnataka under the BJP rule said M A Baby, the Polit Bureau member of Communist Party of India.
After visiting city based television journalist Naveen Soorinje, who is currently undergoing treatment for chickenpox symptoms in the jail ward of Government Wenlock Hospital, here, on Thursday, Mr Baby told media persons that taking action against media person for carrying out his duty is condemnable.
“Charging a journalist, who had discharged his professional duty, with grave offences such as dacoity showed authoritarian attitude of the State government,” he said.
While sailors from Italy accused of murder of two fishermen in Kerala had been allowed to be with their family in Italy during Christmas, Mr. Soorinje had been in jail for the last 50 days, he said.
Mr Baby expressed solidarity with Mr. Soorinje in his fight against the charges filed against him in connection with the July 28 home-stay attack case.
Mr. Soorinje, who was instrumental in bringing to light the shocking attack on young men and women attending a party, was among the 44 persons against whom the police have filed a chargesheet.
The police have arrested 31 persons, including Mr. Soorinje. He has been in jail since November 7. He was brought to the jail ward of the Wenlock Government Hospital after being diagnosed with chicken pox on Tuesday.
Mr. Baby went to meet Mr. Soorinje after taking part in the padayatra by CPI (M) activists against pankti bedha and made snana in Udupi.
Mr. Baby reportedly told Mr. Soorinje that he had contracted chickenpox when he had been arrested for fighting against imposition of Emergency.
