Mangalore, Jan 1: Vittala Malekudiya, the tribal boy pursuing his post-graduation in Mangalore University, who was arrested by ANF on March 10 last year for alleged naxal links, has been granted permission by Mangalore University to attend classes again after an academic year of his was wasted due to lack of attendance following his arrest.
Following his struggle in the court and in spite of writing his examinations while still being in prison, he was not granted his examination results on grounds of lack of attendance as he was in jail for four months.
Initially, after he was arrested, the University refused to allow Mr. Malekudiya to write his exams. But following the directive of the court, he was able to write his examinations. However, he was denied his marks sheet by the University on grounds that he has attendance shortage. Now, he has been given permission to resume his studies in the same class and after being re-admitted, he will continue as a second semester student at the Varsity from Tuesday onwards.
Mr. Malekudiya was released on July 3, 2012.
Meanwhile, P S Yedapadithaya, Registrar of the University, has stated that legal opinion is being garnered with regard to Mr. Malekudiya, “Although another instance of Mr. Malekudiya missing out on attendance this semester is unlikely, since he was released on conditional bail, the University is obtaining legal opinion in this regard,” he said.
