Mangalore, Jan 3: Complaints of mental illnesses and cancer have been found in many people living in proximity of mobile tower radiuses in four taluks of the coastal district.
This revelation was made by O R Shrirangappa, District Health Officer (DHO), when the issue of mobile towers affecting the health of people living close to them was raised at the 10th common meet held at Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat on Thursday.
ZP member Santhosh Kumar Rai raised the issue of mobile towers posing health threat to people while stating that in some instances, a single tower is being used to accommodate different mobile companies which is resulting in stronger emission of radiation.
When asked to respond, the District Health Officer said that a survey is being conducted to find out the impact of mobile tower radiation on the health of people living in the radius of 500 meters of such towers and so far reports from four taluks have been received according to which, cases such as mental illnesses and cancer have been found.
However, the complete report is yet to be submitted and the situation in Mangalore taluk is yet to be ascertained. When data on all taluks will be at hand, a detailed report will be submitted, the DHO informed.
The issue of constructing houses for Koragas in the district also dominated the proceedings with members complaining that in spite of the matter being discussed several times, not much progress has been achieved.
MLA U T Khader suggested that the funds be obtained from private establishments as part of their corporate social responsibility and an attempt be made to find out as to what is the amount companies like MRPL and Infosys have spent on their social responsibility obligation and accordingly a communication be made to the Central Government to get the mandatory funds released so that construction of houses for Koragas gains momentum.
Earlier, members of the opposition led by M S Mohammed, demanded an answer on the dissolution of the Hirebandadi Gram Panchayat stating that even the High Court of Karnataka had expressed displeasure over the move. Koragappa Naik, President of the Zilla Panchayat, refused to answer the query and asked the opposition members to wait for the scheduled agendas to be discussed first.
