Inaugurating the 24th National Road Safety week organized by Dakshina Kannada district administration, RTO and the police, at Town Hall, on Monday Dr Shetty said that after Bangalore, port city of Mangalore tops the chart in road mishaps.
He said that 1.2 per cent of road mishaps happen due to cycle riders, 2.7 per cent due to pedestrians, 1.2 due to bad roads, 1 per cent due to unfavourble weather and 14 per cent due to various other reasons. “In the world, every year an average of 50 crore accidents happen in which over 1.2 crore people lose their lives. In India, yearly one crore mishaps take place in which over 16 lakh people get injured seriously while 1.2 lakh lose their lives. It is estimated that one life is claimed by road mishap every six minutes and it is said that the accident rate will go to one per three minutes in 2030,” he said holding lack of awareness to be the reason for most mishaps.
Inspector General of Police (Western Range) Prathap Reddy said that department will take all necessary steps to spread awareness on traffic rules and road safety.
“If the drivers follow the rules and maintain discipline on road, the responsibility of the police will come down drastically,” the IGP said.
