The fire that broke out at Primacy Industries at Baikampady has raised questions on the safety measures taken in the industries set up in Baikampady Industrial Area.

In spite of 14 fire service vehicles being pressed into action from Moodbidri, Bantwal, Puttur, Udupi and Mangalore, besides 4 firefighters belonging to MCF, MRPL and ONGC, it was not possible to bring the fire under control for a long period of time.

Just got lucky

The incident has left behind several points to ponder upon. Government departments concerned need to take a part of the blame for not checking for safety measures taken up by the establishments, while issuing necessary permit to them. What makes safety measures in this particular industrial area all the more important is the fact that it is surrounded by residential areas and there are places where there is heavy concentration of different types of chemicals. According to KIADB, in the Baikampady Industrial Area spread across 482 acres, there are 504 different types of industries. However, the KIADB is not aware as to how many of these industries store inflammable and hazardous chemicals in their go downs. Workers just got lucky in this mishap because there were no deaths reported.

Not our business

As far as officials are concerned, the blame game is on. The KIADB passes the buck claiming that their job is merely confined to sanctioning of land and that safety measures fall under the ambit of the Pollution Control Board. The Pollution Control Board on the other hand states that the factory which got gutted on Thursday night had obtained its certificate and ensuring further safety measures is Industrial Security Superintendent's business.

Violated rules

K G Nanjappa, Deputy Director, Industries (Safety Department), says that it is necessary for every industry to possess a Fire Detection Alert system. The fire accident at the factory at Baikampady took place because this system was not in place there. “Every industry must have fire extinguishing equipment, fire detection systems, alarm system to notify security control room etc. The alarm system was not connected to the security room in the gutted factory,” he reveals while adding that the factory had not obtained an No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Fire Services.

Workers in industries are also given training with regard to precautionary measures and according to workers of the gutted factory, such training had been imparted to them. In the entire Dakshina Kannada district, 10 industries have been identified as dangerous, and one of them is situated in Baikampady Industrial Area. As a precautionary measure, information and training is provided at that industry every six months, Mr. Nanjappa says.

In fear

Not too far away from the gutted factory is the Angaragundi residential area, at a distance of about 500 metres. Following Thursday's fire accident, the residents of the area are living in constant fear.

“We have to spend every day with a sense of fear. Hundreds of industries are set up with promises of jobs for locals. Forget jobs, locals like us are not even allowed to roam around these industries. My house is situated nearby. When the factory caught fire, I along with a few others rushed to the spot and tried to extinguish the fire. After about 50 minutes the fire services arrived at the spot and by that time, the fire had spread a fair deal”, says Salim, a local resident.

In spite of an appeal being made to the district administration from the last 10 years to set up a fire service station at Baikampady, there has not been any progress. Ultimately the question still remains to be the same. How safe is Baikampady Industrial Area?

Mangaluru, Apr 10: In a profound act of generosity and faith, senior businessman and Congress leader Inayath Ali has donated 1.5 acres of prime land in the heart of Mangaluru for the construction of a Haj Bhavan. The land—strategically located just 1.5 kilometres from the Mangaluru International Airport and adjacent to a major road—is estimated to be worth over ₹8 crore.

The donation, made earlier this week, has captured public attention not just for its magnitude, but for the spirit behind it. At a time when the nation is engaged in an intense debate over the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Act, this selfless contribution opens a new chapter in understanding the true essence of waqf.

According to sources, the upcoming Haj Bhavan will house a mosque, and offer training and orientation services for pilgrims travelling to Mecca—providing both spiritual and logistical support to hundreds of Hajj aspirants from the region.

What sets this gesture apart is the absolute surrender of rights by Inayath Ali. Despite not being a high-profile industrialist or real estate mogul, he has forfeited all claims over the land. Under Islamic waqf principles, once a property is donated, neither the donor nor their descendants can reclaim or profit from it—making it a permanent endowment for the community.

This timely development is sparking fresh conversations about the spiritual and charitable foundations of waqf, especially amid allegations and controversies surrounding waqf properties in various parts of the country. Critics often claim that waqf lands have expanded disproportionately or were historically acquired from other communities. Inayath Ali’s donation stands as a counter-narrative—one that reflects the voluntary, sacred, and socially uplifting nature of such endowments.

For generations, Muslims—from wealthy businesspersons to humble individuals—have donated land and property to build mosques, madrasas, orphanages, and cemeteries. Elders from the coastal Muslim community affirm that such acts are not merely cultural traditions but are deeply rooted in the belief that sadaqah jariyah (a continuing charity) benefits the soul in both this world and the hereafter.

Inayath Ali’s contribution, thus, is not just a donation of land—it is a message of unity, service, and spiritual vision for generations to come.

Bengaluru, April 12: Karnataka is set to experience a fresh spell of rainfall across multiple districts from April 12 to 18, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The forecast comes on the heels of an unusually wet start to April, with most parts of the state already recording significantly above-average rainfall.

Data from the IMD reveals that Karnataka received 19.1 mm of rainfall in the first week of April—well above the state’s average of 4.7 mm for the period. Rainfall activity was already observed on Friday in parts of coastal Karnataka, north interior Karnataka, and isolated pockets of the south interior region. Mangaluru (Dakshina Kannada) recorded 4 cm of rain, while several areas in Yadgir—including Kakkeri, Shorapur, Saidapur, and Gabbur—each received 3 cm. Similar amounts were recorded in Jalahalli (Raichur) and parts of Bidar district.

With more wet days ahead, the rainfall is expected to bring some relief from the heat as Karnataka continues into the heart of summer.

deeksha.jpg

Shivamogga: From the serene town of Thirthahalli, Deeksha R, a bright student of Vagdevi Pre-University College, has made her mark on the state stage by sharing the first rank in the Science stream of the PU 2 examinations. She scored an outstanding 599 out of 600, tying with Amoolya Kamath of Mangaluru.

Deeksha is the daughter of Raghavendra Kalkura and Usha V, both committed educators. Her father, a teacher at the Government High School in Megaravalli, said with joy, “We were expecting around 595 marks. But 599 was a surprise and a moment of pure happiness. Deeksha didn’t study daily in a strict routine, but she was focused and had a well-planned approach. During her study holidays, I helped her prioritise subjects based on need.”

Deeksha's academic brilliance isn’t new — she had earlier scored 98.6% in Grade 10 (ICSE) at Sahyadri School, Bettamakki. Her PU college teachers recognised her potential early and provided strong support throughout.

Looking ahead, Deeksha has big ambitions — she plans to pursue a career in Artificial Intelligence engineering. She has already appeared for the JEE exams and is preparing for the CET next week. “We’re hopeful she’ll secure a seat in a top engineering college,” her father added.

College Principal Mamata expressed immense pride: “Deeksha never attended any tuition outside of college. Her discipline and commitment were remarkable. It’s a proud moment for our college and our town.”

By sharing the top rank in the state, Deeksha has not only brought glory to her hometown but also become a symbol of how talent, discipline, and the right guidance can create a truly stellar success story.
