First round of pulse polio immunization in DK on Jan 20

Mangalore, Jan 17: As part of the National Pulse Polio Programme 2013, the first round of pulse polio immunization for children under 5 years of age, will be held in the district on January 20, N Prakash, Deputy Commissioner, Dakshina Kannada district said.

Briefing media persons at his office in Mangalore on Thursday about the programme, Mr. Prakash said that the district administration is keen on getting all children in the district immunized with pulse polio drops, especially children of migrant workers in the district.

As per the 2011 census, the district has a population of 20,83,625. Children between 0-5 years of age number a total of 1,63,860 in the district. Polio drops would be given to children in a total of 921 booths in the district. 3882 vaccinators, 193 supervisors, 11 mobile teams and 27 transit teams would be pressed into action.

The mobile teams and transit teams will exclusively concentrate on immunizing children in public places such as bus stands, fairs, and other places of public density.

Besides, house to house visits will also be undertaken. The DC said on the occasion that an attempt to create awareness among flat and apartment society members would be made to allow pulse polio volunteers to meet the inmates of the apartments and not turn them away as such instances have been occurring in the past.

The Deputy Commissioner also urged people not to have negative notions about pulse polio drops and not take any instance of a child falling ill the same day as the pulse polio drops are given in a negative sense as there are cases of such coincidences here and there.

The last polio case in the country was found in Howrah of West Bengal. In Dakshina Kannada district, the last instance of a polio case was back in 1999.

Mangaluru, Nov 3: A quiet morning turned perilous for a farmer in Elathur, near Kinnigoli on the outskirts of the city, as a leopard attacked him while he was cutting grass. 

Ligori, a resident of Kalkare, was startled by the sudden assault and suffered injuries to his face but managed to escape and reach safety. He was promptly taken to the hospital for medical care.

Residents in Elathur have been on edge for over a week following reports of leopard sightings in the area. Today’s incident has heightened concerns among the local farming community, who now fear for their safety.

With a significant population of farmers in the region, villagers are demanding immediate action from the forest department to capture the leopard and ensure their safety. 

The community awaits a response, hoping for swift intervention to prevent further attacks.
