Mangalore, Jan 18: The ancient laterite structure of University College, Mangalore standing right at the heart of the city will see some major developmental works soon.
A sum of Rs 1.8 crore has been spent on the construction of the new building and Rs 2.3 crore is being spent on infrastructure facilities in the college, out of which Rs 80 lakhs will be spent on a new block with eight rooms and an auditorium, said Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor Dr T C Shivashankarmurthy.
Speaking after inaugurating the newly-constructed BBM block at University College, Mangalore, he said that other infrastructures include a new road inside the campus, upgrading ladies room and renovation of the main building, which will be ready by June-July 2013. All this will give a 'new look' to the college,” he said adding that tenders have been floated to start ten works. “A post graduation centre is also being planned at an estimated cost of Rs 1.1 crore.
Speaking about the remarkable performance of the colleges coming under the purview of the University, he said that the university's constituent colleges in Mangalore and Madikeri have now become eligible to apply for being 'potential centres of excellence' because of the 'A' accreditation given by NAAC. These colleges have quality teachers and discipline in their teaching, said the Vice-Chancellor.
Prof Shivashankarmurthy stressing on quality in education, lamented that only 10 to 12 per cent of those passing out from degree courses and 18 to 23 per cent from technical courses are employable as they do not get quality education and hands-on training in colleges.
MU Registrar Prof P S Yadapadithaya said that the new block was 'another feather in the cap' for the university.
Former registrar of MU Prof Chinnappa Gowda spoke on the occasion.
Contractor of the newly-built BBM building Hemanth Shetty was honoured during the programme.
H R Laxminarayana Bhatta welcomed the gathering on the occasion. Mangalore University executive engineer N Shivashankara Swamy delivered a vote of thanks and head of Department of Political Science Dr Parvathi A A compeered the programme.
