According to sources, the brothers frequently fought with each other over property issues. Late on Saturday night, a fight broke out between the two as usual and unable to control his anger Padmanabha Bhat assaulted his younger brother with a club, which led to excessive bleeding and subsequent death.
The deceased, Narayana Bhat had remained unmarried and due to this he had written all his property in the name of his elder brother Padmanabha Bhat in 1991 in lieu of the right to stay in a room in his elder brother's house.
After this, Narayana Bhat started staying in a room in Padmanabha Bhat's house but eventually started harassing the brother to give his property back. He soon went to the police and even procured a stay order from the Court. Questioning the same, even Padmanabha Bhat went to court and won over the case. Frustrated by the Court's decision, the younger brother started acting insane by locking all the rooms of the house and sometimes even going on a spree of damaging the house.
On Saturday, when Padmanabha Bhat's wife Gopi headed to the kitchen to complete her daily chores, Narayana Bhat blocked the kitchen entrance with bricks. When she bent to clear it off, Narayana Bhat held from behind. As Gopi tried to break out of his clutches, Padmanabha Bhat assaulted his younger brother with a club on his head. Narayana Bhat succumbed to excessive bleeding.
A case has been registered at Punjalakatte police station.
