The Port has also achieved the target of 30 million tonnes fixed by the Ministry for the year 2012-13(upto January 2013). The container traffic also registered a steady growth by handling 37,759 TEUs (as on date) registering 3.75% growth. The increased growth in the handling of coal, POL crude and products by MRPL, maize, containerised cargoes, etc. has contributed to the upward growth in traffic.
Dr. P. Tamilvanan, Chairman, in a release has stated that the Port could reach this stage inspite of the sudden shortfall to the tune of 8 million tonnes of, iron ore traffic due to mining ban.
Attributing the growth to marketing efforts coupled with infrastructure addition and sincere cooperation by the officers, employees, cargo handling workers, trade unions and the Port Users, he said that otherwise it would have been a difficult goal to achieve.
