Mangalore, January 29: In view of providing financial aid to help children of single parent pursue their education, a cheque distribution programme was held at the Deputy Commissioner's office in Mangalore on Tuesday.
Cheques were distributed to 99 beneficiaries by N Prakash, Deputy Commissioner, Dakshina Kannada district on behalf of the District Children's Protection Unit.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Prakash urged the children to make use of the financial aid being provided by the government and derive inspiration from the hardships their parents are encountering.
Gracy Gonsalves, District Child Protection Officer, said that the unit came into existence in April last year and is headed by the Deputy Commissioner himself.
In response to a question on the delay in disbursement of the financial aid to children as they are already in the end of their academic year, Ms. Gonsalves said that the fund of Rs. 2 lakh was released by the government in September and the process of finalizing of beneficiaries took time. However, the DC directed the concerned official to ensure that the cheques are distributed among beneficiaries within ten days of funds being released from the government in future.
A cheque distribution programme of this sort was held for the first time ever since the District Children's Protection Unit came into existence. Financial help is provided to children to pursue education who are from single parent families with an annual income of below Rs. 24,000.
Dr. K N Vijayprakash, CEO, DK Zilla Panchayath and Asha Nayak, Chairperson, Child Welfare Committee, were also present.
